Day 52 – Pike Place Market Gum Wall
Posted on | February 21, 2010 | 13 Comments |

It was another beautiful day here in Seattle and I went out for a long walk with my camera. I finally remembered to capture the picture I’ve been wanting to post for a while; the picture of the most disgusting tourist attraction in Seattle. In fact this wall was selected as #2 in the the world’s top five germiest attractions by Trip Advisor. Yes, it is a wall of gums. People started sticking their gums on this wall just outside the Market theatre as they waited in line to buy tickets and to watch the shows. This wall was scraped clean twice, but that didn’t stop people from sticking their gums here. Finally the officials gave up sometime in the late 1990s and declared it a tourist attraction. The wall is growing in size now and people have been using chewed up gums in very creative ways. If you are not completely grossed out my it, you can check out a few more pics of the wall including some real close up shots here.

I’m not grossed out either. Very creative indeed. May be I should contribute to this work of art when I visit Seattle

Interesting…a little gross, but interesting. Reminds me of a restaurant in Pto. Vallarta that has years and years of pen, pencil, and knife-etched graffiti on every table, chair, wall- ceiling too! i like the subtleties in the color-undulation of these “works” that become vivid upon approach.

Like Sra and Mamtha, I am not grossed out either. The wall looks like a work of art and if you don’t say what it is looks like a mosaic wall.
