Catfish Sandwich and a Difficult Week Past
Wednesday, May 14th, 2008Filed Under Mains, Seafood | 46 Comments
Do you know what a clear liquid diet is? Do you know there is something called good bacteria in your stomach? Do you know what acidophilus is? Do you know why they call it an Emergency Room if they make you wait for 4 hours before you get to see even a nurse?
These are just a few of the questions we had to ask ourselves this past week. Some knowledge was gained the hard way, some questions still remain unanswered. […]
Steamed Tilapia with a Roasted Onion Marinade
Sunday, March 16th, 2008Filed Under India - Kerala, Mains, Seafood | 32 Comments
I’ve been real busy lately with work deadlines fast approaching, and preparing for a trip coming up in a week or so. I didn’t get time to look at my rss feeds for three days, and suddenly the number of unread posts were in three digits. I have way too many recipes and restaurant reviews waiting in my drafts. If I don’t type those up soon, the details will be forgotten for sure. The to-do pile for blogging is as […]
Crab Curry
Wednesday, February 13th, 2008Filed Under Crab, India - Tamil Nadu, Seafood | 36 Comments
Wish you all a fabulous Valentine’s day! Siv and I are not too big into V-day, it is just another occasion to go out and eat. But over the past few years, Valentine’s day has become the worst day to go out for dinner. Every place is crowded, you have to wait for at least half an hour before the table is free even after making reservations. And the worst part is, even the normally good restaurants churn out mass-produced, […]
Roasted Salmon Steaks on a Bed of Potatoes, Fennel and Leeks
Wednesday, January 9th, 2008Filed Under Quick-fix healthy meals, Seafood | 35 Comments
One of our New Year resolutions is to start eating a little healthier. We have been pigging out the entire holiday season; too many dinner parties, restaurant visits, vacations etc caused both of us to gain a few extra inches around the waist. No regrets, because we sure had a lot of fun doing all those, and that is what the holiday season is all about, isn’t it? Anyway, now that life is back on track […]

So, what’s the story, you wonder? Well, back in November, multi-talented blogging diva Jaden of Steamy Kitchen, ran a contest on her blog, to give away a cool new cookbook called Modern Indian Cooking to her readers.
Lemon Garlic Trout with Sicilian Harvest Salad - A Quick Fix Dinner
Tuesday, September 25th, 2007Filed Under Greens, Mains, Seafood, Soups and Salads | 32 Comments
I haven’t been cooking much lately. After about three months of social hiatus, there was a lot of catching up to do. When my parents were in town, I spent all my spare time with them. I think that is the least one can do for their parents, especially when they visit only once in a blue moon. Luckily all our friends are very understanding, and we could pick up right where we left off. Since most all of our social […]
Sambal Shrimp
Wednesday, September 19th, 2007Filed Under Mains, Seafood, Shrimp or Prawn, South East Asia | 29 Comments
This recipe is based on two different Sambal Shrimp recipes I found in two of my cookbooks. One is an Indonesian Tangy Sambal Shrimp from the book Fabulous Asian Homestyle Recipes, and the other one is the Malaysian version Sambal Udang from Savoring Southeast Asia. There were some differences between the two, but I didn’t have all the ingredients for either. So I combined both the recipes, and made some substitutions and additions, and ended up with my own version of […]
Prawn and Mango Curry - Another Kerala Delicacy
Sunday, September 9th, 2007Filed Under India - Kerala, Mains, Seafood | 23 Comments
I can see those eyes rolling, another seafood preparation from Kerala? Enough already!!! Well, what can I say, Kerallites live on seafood, and regardless of how similar the ingredient lists look like, each dish is unique.
The common theme for most of the Kerala seafood dishes is an equal mix of spicy and sour flavors! The sourness comes from kudampuli (aka fish tamarind or malabar tamarind) or tamarind or mangoes depending on the season and the region. My guess is that this trend started to […]
Meen Peera (Fish with Grated Coconut)
Wednesday, August 15th, 2007Filed Under India - Kerala, Seafood, Side Dish - Dry | 30 Comments
Meen Peera is a traditional Kerala dish popular in central Kerala where I am from. The preparation is very similar to thoran, made with fish instead of vegetables, and fish tamarind (kudampuli) added for sourness. This dish is usually made with the small varieties of whole fresh water fish available in Kerala. Since cleaning small fish is such a pain, you could always use fish filets in this recipe, which is what I’ll be doing after my mom leaves. But […]
Grilled Trout in Banana Leaf
Monday, August 6th, 2007Filed Under Mains, Misc, Seafood | 26 Comments
Cooking food wrapped in Banana leaves is an age old technique in Kerala. Our fish pollichathu is the most delicious form of fish that I’ve ever eaten! I wasn’t surprised to learn that the same technique is followed in other Asian countries too. Cooking this way keeps the food moist with all its natural juices collected inside the leaf packet. Also the banana leaf itself imparts its natural flavor and fragrance into the food.
Instead of a traditional fish Pollichathu […]
Yet another Kerala Fish Curry
Friday, July 6th, 2007Filed Under India - Kerala, Mains, Recipes, Seafood | 23 Comments
We are back from our marathon sight seeing trip. Now I really need a vacation! It was scorching hot in San Diego and Disneyland, but that felt like North Pole after we got to Las Vegas - 115 degrees! Wow, it was unbearable, even for my parents. Who knew that coming from India, heat is ever going to be a problem!! It really felt like a furnace, we had to get up at 3:00 am to drive to Grand Canyon. In Vegas, we […]
Catfish Curry - Kerala Style
Thursday, June 14th, 2007Filed Under India - Kerala, Mains, Recipes, Seafood | 39 Comments
It’s been a few days since my last post. My parents finally arrived last weekend, so as you can imagine I’ve been busy with the onboarding process. Its been almost five years since their last visit, also we weren’t living in the city last time they were around, so it took a bit of orientation time. Even though we have less space now, it is less boring for them now that they have places to go to when Siv and I are […]
Kerala Prawn Fry
Thursday, June 7th, 2007Filed Under India - Kerala, Recipes, Seafood, Shrimp or Prawn | 44 Comments
Has this ever happened to you? You find this interesting recipe in a cookbook. You check the fridge and pantry and see that most of the ingredients are there. You put your chef’s hat on and get cooking, adding your own special touches to the recipe. The dish turns out to be a masterpiece, tastes wonderful, looks great! You are so hungry you could faint, but you feel it is your duty to share this gem with the world! So you transfer the […]
Pan Fried Halibut in Tamarind Sauce - A Quick Fix Dinner
Tuesday, May 1st, 2007Filed Under Mains, Misc, Recipes, Seafood | 26 Comments
There is no concept of too much fish in a mallu kitchen. Well, mine is a half mallu, half Tamil kitchen, but the statement still holds true; we are both avid fish lovers. But somehow we did end up with too much fish in the fridge over last weekend! Weather was really nice, so I walked down to the Pike Place Market and picked up some pink snapper and striped bass on Friday afternoon. Same day Siv brought home some Halibut filets […]
Pan-Roasted Fish Masala - A twist on a classic Kerala dish
Monday, April 9th, 2007Filed Under Good with Drinks, India - Kerala, Mains, Recipes, Seafood | 29 Comments
One of my favorite fish preparations from back home is Karimeen Pollichathu- Karimeen (Pearl Spot, a type of fish found in the back waters of Kerala) along with spices wrapped in Banana leaves and baked to perfection. The best authentic form of Karimeen Pollichathu is available at the Toddy Shops in central Kerala. Yes, my parents used to take us to Toddy shops, but not the kind that you are thinking of (if you have ever heard about the streetside kallu shaapu in Kerala) ! No, […]
Dry Curry Crab- Tamil Style
Tuesday, March 6th, 2007Filed Under Crab, India - Tamil Nadu, Mains, Recipes, Seafood | 12 Comments
This is another one of my mother-in-law’s recipes, perfected by Siv. She is a fantastic cook, but somehow I always like Siv’s versions a little better. I guess the secret ingredient makes all the difference; yeah I’m talking about “Luvvvvvv” ;). Okay, he is sitting right next to me, and I need someone to load the dishwasher.
My favorite crab preparation is the Red Curry Crab at Malay Satay Hut, our favorite Malaysian restaurant. This is a very close […]
Mashed Potato Shooters with Spiced Crab Meat
Thursday, March 1st, 2007Filed Under Appetizers and Snacks, Crab, Potato, Recipes, Seafood | 7 Comments
I started blogging just two months ago; about a month ago during one of my regular food blog lurking sessions, I came across the event Jihva for POTATO . This was the first time I was even hearing about a blog event, and I wanted to participate so badly. But I was kind of lost, potatoes are a filler ingredient in most of my dishes, so I decided to wait for another month to participate in a JFI event. But […]
Fish Curry - Tamil style
Saturday, January 27th, 2007Filed Under India - Tamil Nadu, Mains, Recipes, Seafood | 5 Comments
Growing up in Kerala, fish was the staple of our diet. I don’t think we had gone two days in a row without some kind of fish. Sometimes we would even have fish for breakfast! Fish curry with Dosa, Idly, Chapatti, Appam, you name a dish, we can have it with fish! Being a working mother, my mom didn’t have time to cook three different dishes for three different meals, I guess that was one of the main reasons for […]
Caramelized Catfish and Pan fried Oysters
Saturday, January 20th, 2007Filed Under Appetizers and Snacks, Mains, Recipes, Seafood, South East Asia | 3 Comments
After a week of eating out, I was in a mood to cook on Thursday night. Menu I came up with:
Caramelized Catfish - This is one of our favorite dishes in Monsoon. I decided to give it an indian touch.
Pan-Fried Oysters with Horseradish cream sauce and mango salsa- I have seen this recipe on Food Network on the Emeril show.
White Rice
Caramelized Catfish
Season 1 lb Catfish filets with some salt, ground black pepper, red chili powder and some curry powder, […]
