If I had to pick my favorite meal of the day, I’d pick brunch without giving it a second thought. It might be because brunch is a strictly weekend deal, so it feels special or it may just be the fact that no brunch is complete without eggs. I absolutely love eggs, in any form and any time of the day. What’s not to love? It goes so well with everything, there are so many ways to have eggs that you’d never get bored. I know there are all those ...

I know I posted a broken wheat recipe just a couple of weeks ago, but I just had to share this one as soon as possible. After the first successful experiment with broken wheat, we were totally smitten by its crunchy texture. It can take some serious abuse without going all mushy on you, so we talked about trying a chicken fried broken wheat (for lack of imagination to come up with a better name) in the lines of chicken fried rice . Then Mamatha came along and suggested adding ...

This one is a rather boring looking curry, but it was really tasty for a quick fix dish made with this and that from the pantry and refrigerator. I have never really combined chickpeas (garbanzo beans) with eggs before, I wasn’t planning on it this time either. As the chickpeas were simmering in the gravy inspiration struck me and those eggs poached in the spicy coconut gravy was just so delicious.

Ingredients

1 can cooked chickpeas (garbanzo beans) washed and drained
2 eggs
1 tbsp oil

We had one of those Seattle weekends, the perfect kind that makes us forget all about the lousy weather we’ve been having for the past few months. Unlike last weekend, this time I did way too much stuff that I am already looking forward to the next weekend to sleep this one off! In between all the fun I managed to go to Pike Place Market to grab some of the fresh summer bounty. I love going to Pike Place on weekends, especially on beautiful sunny weekends.
Today was the first day on the Hunger Challenge where we had to spend just $12 on breakfast, lunch and dinner for two. I am too tired to type out the details, but here is the table that shows what we had, and how much each meal came to.
Even though the total came very close to the budgeted $12 for the day, I have enough left overs from dinner which will be our lunch tomorrow. So tomorrow’s cost is going to be lower.
I used spices from my pantry, and have ...

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, but that is definitely not for the food. I just don’t get the fuss about turkey, it’s gotta be the most tasteless meat around in my opinion. I am sure there are others who will agree with me, if that’s not the case why don’t they serve turkey at any of the fine restaurants? We normally get out of town during thanksgiving, so I haven’t made many traditional thanksgiving dinners, but the few times I have, I always substituted turkey with chicken or ...

Recently Sra wrote that she has used up all her potato memories, but she did have enough memories to fill about a dozen posts… That got me thinking about my relationship with the spud, and I realized that sadly I may not even have enough memories to fill one post!
Growing up, potatoes were these large ugly cubes in sambar with the weird texture ...

Once in a while I get e-mails from readers asking for menu suggestions for a dinner party they are planning. This is my absolute favorite part of any party- coming up with the menu. Siv and I spend days planning a menu for the parties that we throw, and come up with an over-ambitious menu comparable to that of a tasting menu at a fine restaurant. But due to utter laziness and the tendency to procrastinate doing any kind of job till the absolute last minute, more often than not we end up ditching the pre-planned menu and do a d-day scrambling to buy groceries [...]

It is a very effective method for learning; even though things may not hit you then and there, eventually you will get some insights.
