About

MeWelcome to Live To Eat - yet another food blog!

I am Sig, a foodie at heart, stuck in the techie world in Seattle, WA with my darling husband Siv where we , along with some dear friends spend a lot of time around food - eating it, talking about it, cooking it etc…  This is the medium for sharing my passion, to share some tried and tested recipes from our kitchen and to share opinions about the restaurants we visit.

All the views expressed here are strictly my own opinions; your perspective may be different. Feel free to disagree with me, but do note that rudeness WILL NOT be tolerated.

I don’t consider myself an expert, neither should you! Try the recipes at your own risk. All the recipes here are tried and tested by me, unless noted otherwise. The measurements given in the ingredient list are mainly for reference, these may vary a bit from what I actually used. Feel free to adjust to suit your palette. If you try a recipe, and figured out a way to make it better, do let me know.

I am from Kerala, a southern state in India. You will find a lot of authentic Kerala recipes here, and most of the other recipes are very much influenced by basic Kerala techniques. Siv is from Tamil Nadu, another southern state in India. You will find a fair amount of Tamil recipes here as well.  We love exploring other cuisines, so there are a bunch of other recipes which don’t fall into either of these categories; it is all about variety here.  We are hardcore carnivores, so as you can guess, the recipes are predominantly non-vegetarian. We also do a lot of experimentation in the bar, so you will find a lot of cocktail recipes here as well.

Thanks for stopping by, browse around, and let me know what I can do to make your visit better.

  3. Sigma,
Nice recipes, I will try to make some of them. I have noticed the curries in sri lankan style is some of the best I ever had.

Hi Shaji, nice to see you here! Let me know if you end up trying anything :)

  4. Gerald (Jerry) Landis says:

    Blessings to you.

I am now back in Altamonte Springs,
    Florida.

Miss the Indian brothers and sisters at the
Marietta Bible Chapel in N. Atlanta, Georgia.
    They were quite a crew.

Did not really remember them bringing INDIAN
STYLE foods to the monthly chapel dinners however.

Only spent a short two year and an half in
    N. Atlanta (Roswell and Alpharetta) but I
do have happy memories of the area,

HARRY’S FARMERS MARKET in Alpharetta and Marietta had foods from all over the world.

Blessings. Once and a while I get nice emails
from some brothers from India around the world.thanks for dropping by Jerry!

    Sigma,
I have tried a number of them, may be a clone due to the fact I don’t get all the ingredients handy very much. However I really liked the passion and effort you have made to the food recipes. By looking at the picture and the write up itself, it is very clear that you have done tremendous good work to prepare it.

Some time when I travel (I do travel 4 days a week as part of my job) I look for authentic Indian food in major US cities, some time is very hard to tell you it is not that much easy to find the right Indian food nowadays.

Have you ever tried to make Indian food in clay cookware with slow cooking?

All the ingredients I use are available in the stores here, most in regular stores and some from the Indian stores… I don’t really look for Indian restaurants, since the food is guaranteed to suck… so unless there is a famed Indo chinese or a South Indian speciality store around, I normally skip those.

And slow cooking, now I’ve never tried it at home… I just don’t have the patience :)

    Hey Sig,
I happened to see your blog when I ‘googled’ for some recipes. To be frank, I liked and tried your recipes because u mentioned ingredients which are easily available here in the US. I like your style of writing. It was very easy for me ( who has just started cooking )to understand. After having tried a few recipes, This is the first place I will look for when i want some recipe.
    Cheers,
    Chaits

Thanks for your kind words Chaits…

    Sig,

Brilliant blog! Thank you for sharing.

I browse through a lot of food blogs, but did not see one with as many must-try recipes for me.

Your assessment on Indian restaurants in US is spot on. It is unfortunate that fewer than 5% of the Indian restaurants here offer food comparable to the food from a basic chain restaurant like Kamat in India.

If you do come across a must-try Indian restaurant list, please publish. I can add a few from NYC area.

Hi Vishnu, thanks and welcome to my blog… Unfortunately I haven’t been to many Indian restaurants that I wanted to go back to… If you have your favorite list, please leave a comment… Last NYC trip we went to Amma and the food was pretty good… Vij’s in Vancouver, BC is my favorite Indian restaurant so far.

  11. Hi Sig,

When i see your recipe its so much identical like my mom’s recipe. I am keralite born and brought in Mumbai, married to a Uttaranchali boy, who hails from Delhi. At present living in Louisville, KY. I liked cooking but never tired before marriage and after marriage with my mom’s on phone support, i managed to cook some kerala cuisine to satisfy my taste. But now that am in Lousiville, i can rely on ur recepies.. :-) one day i called up my mom around 5 am her time to check for rasam recipe…oh god that so bad of me but what to do i just want the same taste as what my mom used to cook. Please keep sharing great Kerala recipe. I shall share some of the Uttaranchal cuisine with you which i have learnt so far :-)…cya.

Hi Sajitha, it is nice to hear from you… I’d love to get a hold of some Uttranchali recipes, I am totally unfamiliar with the cuisine… Hope you will e-mail me some when you get a chance… :)

    Thanks
    Sajeev
    Barbados

Hi Sajeev, I got my copy from India. Sorry, I don’t know where you can get it from in Barbados, an online search will be your best bet..

  15. sajeev says:

    Thanks for the reply.
Perhaps you can tell me where in India so I can pick one up when I visit
    Sajeev

I bought mine from Kottayam, Kerala, it is published by D.C Press, Kottayam. I am not sure if you could find it in other states! Sorry, I am not familiar with India’s book scene to tell you where exactly you could find it.

forgot to tell you one thing, i tried ur pavakka theeyal came out very well.
one thing i added. as the theeyal was very bitter, i did my own addition
    here you are…..
in another pan add 2 spoon oil, add finely chopped tomatoes-2 no and finely chopped green chillies 2 no, saute well, till tomatoes start becoming a paste. now add this to the fully prepared theeyal and boil for 2 min, the bitterness reduces to a large extent and becomes more tasty………..try it sig

    Hi Sig,

Amazing pic. Phew! I have spent about 2 hrs in your blog today and that’s a RECORD. I am reading a blog at the most for 10-15 mins and outta there usually. Even when i used to visit your for recipes, I’d drool over the pics until somebody notices, make notes and quit. Today your SBD diet story kept me here this long. U TRULY are an inspiration and seeing your pic helps. I am starting on mine seriously tomorrow(all plans of weekend hogging set aside) so I can get back into my size 8 jeans this summer. I went all the way to size 12 and now wear a very uncomfortable size 10 (may be because i don’t see many size 11). Thanks a bunch for all your patience in detailing the diet program including prepwork and grocery list.
