Wrapping Up the Hunger Challenge

27 April 2009 19 Comments

I just remembered that I never wrapped up my Hunger Challenge daily recap. The last day on the hunger challenge was very uneventful, with some quick and easy sandwiches with sautéed ground chicken and spinach for lunch and a meal out of various leftovers for dinner for a total of $6.83.

Friday- Hunger Challenge

This brings our weekly total to $46.86 less than the budgeted $60, but as I mentioned before I have so many resources at my disposal that made this challenge easier than it is for most of those who are actually on food stamps. Knowing how to put together a decent meal with available ingredients is just one of those resources, and the few recipes I shared last week were to give some ideas to those who are bored with their daily routine. Click on the picture below to check out all the recipes from Hunger Challenge week.

Hunger Relief Now!

The Hunger Challenge was organized by United Way of King County as part of the Hunger Action Week. United Way released their “Hunger Relief Now!” plan, which is a comprehensive plan on reducing hunger in King County, which is out-lined in their blog http://uwkc.wordpress.com/2009/04/24/whats-the-plan/ The plan is an outline to bring the community together and fight hunger in a number of different ways.

How can you help?

Hunger relief week and the Hunger Challenge were organized to raise awareness about hunger in the community and to get people to talk about the issue of hunger. Now, if you are wondering how you can help this worthy cause, you can donate to United Way through their donation page: https://npo.networkforgood.org/Donate/Donate.aspx?npoSubscriptionId=1000676&code=UWKC%20Web%20home
The money collected goes to the Basic Needs fund, which invests the dollars in carefully-chosen community partners including:

  • Food banks—to help them acquire additional supplies and extend service hours.
  • Large regional distributors of donated food to enhance their capacity.
  • Outreach organization that help people learn about and quality for public benefits

This was a remarkable ‘project’, Sig. I have been following your progress and your menus were as creative as ever. Only yesterday, I was reading how fast food and therefore obesity rises during times of recession (already McDonald’s and Burger King have announced good results), because people think healthy eating comes with a heftier price tag. Also, like you pointed out in an early post, not everyone can come back from work and have the energy to cook a meal.

  18. sandeepa says:

Good work Sig. It indeed is difficult to come back home and cook every single day. But I fell most our Indian meals help solve such problems

  19. A&N says:

    Good job, Sig!
