South Beach Diet Phase 2, End of Week 2 Checkpoint

3 January 2009 21 Comments

I had many slips this past week. A bunch of us went out for a prix-fixe New Year’s eve dinner, and of course one of the courses was dessert. After all it was New Year’s eve, not a night to think about any kind of self-control or deprivation. So I had my hazelnut gelato, Look how big the portion was, but I just had one scoop.

NewYear 2009 -151

Earlier in the week there was a potluck holiday party. It is tough to stick to the diet at a potluck. If you just go to a friend’s place for dinner, you could pick and choose the dishes, it is okay to skip a dish if one person cooked the whole meal. But at a potluck, you can’t really skip any dish without offending someone. So I tasted everything, including a black forest pudding and a kheer. There was another dinner on New Year’s day at a new friend’s place, it was a six course meal and most of the dishes were so new to me (some authentic Marathi and Gujarati dishes) and the fact that all the dishes were extremely delicious really didn’t help the cause. I overate again, that too late into the night. So the scale showed a lot of fluctuations over the past 7 days, and ultimately I am +0.5lb from where I started. Only consolation is that all the slips were totally worth it, it was the holiday season after all!

I did try out some new dishes last week, I will post the recipes later in the week. For now, I will share some of my favorite South Beach snacks here.

  • Edamame – Fresh soybeans are full of proteins and they make a quick snack. Frozen edamame can be found shelled or in the pod. Use shelled ones for an on-the-go snack or in salads. But at home I love having the whole edamame sprinkled with some salt, it is more fun to eat them whole.
  • Laughing Cow Light Cheese – I love how creamy and mild these are. At home I spread this on celery sticks, but it can also work as a snack to go on its own.
  • Hummus – Hummus makes a quick and healthy dip for crudités, or even whole grain crackers after phase 1.  I’ve been using store-bought, but it will be even better to make your own, which I will be doing soon.
  • Almonds – Almonds are full of protein, iron and magnesium and contain higher fiber content than other nuts. These are my saviors as there is no prep-work. It is better to store the almonds and other nuts in the freezer or refrigerator as the nuts will go rancid quickly at room temperature due to the high oil content.  I love having almonds straight out of the freezer, but if that’s not your forte, just microwave high for 1 minute to warm these up.

Featured South Beach Dinner – No-oil baked Chicken in a Garlic-Cilantro-Mint Marinade

Use this recipe, but use chicken breast instead of thighs.

And finally, here is the latest stats. This week’s change is +0.5lbs.

Target Weight Loss 17.5lb
Days on Diet 26
lbs lost so far 7.5
lbs to go 10

Way to go, Sig! I made sure I didn’t break my diet on New Year’s Day in a bout of superstition – of course, I also didn’t go anywhere except work and home, but that helped.

:) that’s good… I am not superstitious about the New Year’s eve/day. If there was any truth to it, I’d have been waking up with a horrible hangover everyday these past few years ;)
