Is anyone else out there in the holiday mood already? My mind is already on vacation. Most people at work have taken the whole week off. I still have a bunch of stuff to finish before we leave for vacation, which I am forcing myself to get to, but this blog is really starting to suffer from my laziness.

We haven’t been cooking much lately except last Saturday night when we threw a dinner party. Siv whipped up this amazing cocktail with tamarind juice, dried ginger powder,  jaggery, lemon juice and vodka. It was so good, I can’t believe I didn’t take a picture! I actually forgot about the blog, which never happens! These days whenever I see any kind of food, even in other’s homes, I get the unbelievable urge to pull my camera out and click. But I have no idea what happened this time! Anyway, he has promised to make it again soon, just for the blog.

And needless to say, I have been ignoring all the blog events going around as well. But one event I really wanted to participate in this month is called Grindless Gravies, hosted by Ms.Sra of the very entertaining blog When my soup came alive. I actually made a gravy just for her, and was all ready to post, when I saw a tiny note in her latest post that yogurt-based kadhis  won’t be accepted, since that will make things too easy!! Well Sra, You don’t know what you are missing, this is one of the most delicious grindless gravies out there… :)

It is not the traditional mambazha pulissery , a very famous dish in Kerala, main difference being the absence of coconut in my version. But it is still super delicious, and have always been a big hit with my guests. But more importantly, check the recipe to see how ridiculously easy it is. This would’ve made a perfect entry for grindless gravies event… oh well :)

Ingredients

Method

Skin and dice the mango into very small pieces. In a saucepan, place the mango pieces, shallots, slit green chilies, ginger, turmeric powder and salt, and pour just enough water to cover the ingredients.

Cook covered till the water is boiling, remove the cover and cook it on medium heat till the mango pieces are really soft, and most of the water is gone. Mash the mango pieces with the back of a heavy wooden spoon to break up the pieces.

Reduce the heat to the lowest flame, and pour the yogurt into the saucepan. Stir well to combine the mashed mango pieces with the yogurt. Keep stirring till the gravy is heated through, don’t let it boil. Remove from the heat.

In a small frying pan, heat oil and add the mustard seeds. When they start to splutter, add the cumin and fenugreek seeds and fry for a few seconds. Add the shallots, curry leaves and red chilies and fry till the shallots are brown. Pour this over the prepared mango-yogurt gravy and mix well.

Serve with rice.

pulissery-coconut???? r u keeping well sig? he he he… now i belive u when u say u forget to take pics coz of holiday mood
creamy texture of mango pulissery has tempted me enough. do u need to use semi-ripe mangoes for this or can i use raw ones? i have few raw mango pieces in my freezer but no semi ripe ones…

:) i had to omit coconut for the grindless gravies, but look where it landed me :) You can use raw mangoes too, add some sugar/jaggery if it is too sour :)

  11. richa on November 20th, 2007 7:33 am

    d-lish!
can i use pineapple instead of mango? any other sub?
i know all about pulling out that camera, i see a beautiful tree with all those red leaves and want to click away, but sanity prevails, not sure if i can capture the essence of fall on camera :nerd:
btw, i know u like dates, posted somethin’ for ya :)

I don’t like pineapple in curries Richa, so try at your own risk… I can’t think of any other subs, but you can omit mangoes, and it still makes a really nice dish… :)

  12. Shella on November 20th, 2007 8:25 am

Sig, I am a great fan of pulisherry. I tell my mom to make this all the time. The season for mangoes calls for making this dish at least once, if not more!! I love your version. So simple!! Thanks. Would you mind too much if I just dip my finger into the bown n lick

I love the pulissery in Kerala made with the small whole mangoes… yummy!

  13. Shella on November 20th, 2007 8:29 am

Sorry, I meant “bowl” n not “bown” I guess I got too carried away by the pulisherry

    :D np.. Shella..

  14. sra on November 20th, 2007 8:47 am

Sig, comment for Rajitha, hope you don’t mind - what shall I reject next, coconut milk? I’m halfway there already! I’ll be glad if I survive this event, virtually speaking!

    :) don’t mind at all…

  15. sra on November 20th, 2007 8:50 am

I mean, if you all let me get away - the comment went before I could really finish it!

:) watch out… there is going to be a rally against you soon…

  16. Rina on November 20th, 2007 8:50 am

My Mom and GM used to make this yogurt preparation without the mango. The color reminds me of that. The bowl looks perfect.

hi Rina, I too make it sometimes without the mango, curry in a jiffy :)

  17. TBC on November 20th, 2007 9:00 am

    I love puliserry.
I have a puliserry post along with many others clicked during Onam, sitting in my drafts folder. I was thinking of sending this to SRA till I realized that it needed ground coconut(at least in my version it does  )
Had not read that yogurt based dishes are not allowed.
BTW, how’s the packing coming along?

oh that Sra is a harda$$ ;) so don’t even think about sending a ground coconut entry :D … packing hasn’t started yet :)

Sig, that drink Siv whipped up sounds too good. Can you please send me the proportions - no pictures is fine!

This mango pulissery looks so creamy and good. Can we make this with pineapple? I just bought a huge, juicy one.

:) Thanks Laavanya, I will post it real soon… I am not a big pineapple fan, in curries… so I don’t know how thats going to taste, but you can give it a try :) let me know if you do.

  27. Aparna on November 21st, 2007 2:40 am

    Hi,
Am a new blogger. Came across you on some comments on other blogs. My m-i-l makes a pulissery this way too, only without the cumin and shallots. She slits the mangoes and puts them in whole and adds a bit of jaggery to balance the tang of the mangoes and yogurt.
    Happy Holidays!

Hi Aparna, welcome to my blog. I will check out yours soon too… Here neither the mango nor the yogurt is that tangy, so I haven’t felt the need for sugar or jaggery :)

  28. sheela on November 21st, 2007 12:57 pm

Hey Sig! Am expecting to see pictures of Spain soon - what parts are you covering in 12 days?

Oh, and I LOVE pulissery - and mambazham, of course - have to try your recipe soon - except mangoes are not in season and they cost about 2$ a piece :(

Enjoy! I am already in Thanksgiving mode now.

Hi Sheela, we are mainly concentrating on Madrid and Barcelona, and some small day trips to nearby cities… trying to keep it non-hectic :) Hope you had a great thanksgiving!
