Bacon Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers
I first had these at a local Mexican restaurant years ago, and it was love at first bite. From then on, whenever I am at a Mexican restaurant, I order these without fail if they have it on the menu; most places do. These spicy little things go so well with ice cold margaritas.
These also make a regular appearance in all my barbecue parties, being a no-fail recipe. There is no way you can go wrong with a recipe so simple! The process is simple, once you clean out those peppers, a duty I have no problems delegating.
Okay, now that I built it up so much, let me get into the recipe.
Ingredients
- 10-12 jalapeno peppers
- about a cup shredded cheese (I used the Mexican blend)
- a few slices of bacon
Method
Make an opening on one side of the pepper by cutting a slice of skin off. Scoop out the veins and seeds from the inside. Stuff the pepper with cheese and wrap with a bacon slice and secure using a toothpick. Repeat…
Grill the peppers on a pre-heated grill on medium heat for about 3 minutes on one side. Turn slightly making sure that the cheese doesn’t flow out, and cook the other side for another 2-3 minutes till the bacon is cooked, and the cheese is melted. (Or you could just pop it in the oven and broil for a few minutes.)
Serve hot with some ice cold Margaritas.
Before…
And After…
Note
Make sure that you wear gloves while cleaning out the jalapenos, these are really hot peppers! Also, try to get all the seeds and veins out, it will still be pretty spicy after all that cleaning, you don’t want to burn your tongue!
This is going off to dear pal Nandita of Saffron Trail who is hosting JFI – Chillies this month. JFI was started by Indira of Mahanandi, read all about it here.

Interesting! Seems like something I would like too (especially since it has jalapenos inside). Will look out for them now.
Sig!!

Fiery peppers!!! Nice pics.
Looks tasty and fiery Sig, but Sis I am looking for a substitute for bacon or maybe I can leave that out.
What a super idea for a bbq party! I can always adapt for ingredients available locally – Super Sig!
A great recipe… Will try it without the bacon though:)…
Sig,now you are talking!! A REAL non-veg to match my sorry non-veg Egg dish!!Hahaha!

they look HOT, onto my substitutions now
wow, that looks super hot hey, do u bite into it or the whole thing just goes in yur mouth, ouch!! yah any substitute for the bacon, thin slice of aubergine, maybe?
will look high and low for lychees in this season…the watermelon daiquiri looks inviting… and i love the name chikun dilruba, heee, makes me say it like, cheekun dilrooooba!!!
Hi Sig! yummy and very hot. Great recipe. Thanks for sharing.
Meeta, it sure is yummy, and you must have it with margaritas… a sure treat!
Viji, thanks
Sup, thanks darling… substitue for bacon, hmm.. I like Rachna’s idea of aubergene slices, I think squash/zucchini slices will work as well… But since those are pretty bland, I am guessing you might want to marinate with some salt and light spices before wrapping… the main taste of this dish comes from the bacon-cheese-spice combo…
Shantanu, look out for this in the Mexican restaurant menus, most of the ones I’ve been to have these in the menu… and it is normally very spicy too…
Padmaja, these are the easiest snacks ever… so go ahead and make some tonight
Jyo, thanks… they were fiery indeed!
Indo,
as I told Sup, you could use some veggie slices to wrap… Will be nice if salty…
Anita, well, you are always so resourceful, aren’t you?
… let me know if you try it… I am very obsessive about the number of dishes I serve in my parties, and this one easily adds a number
Priyanka…
let me know how it tastes without the bacon
Asha hehe, your non-veg dish was great though…
and yeah I lovvve bacon too… I have to have it with my eggs all the time… if you love jalapeno poppers and bacon, you will love this one!
Richa
yep, always get the guys to do the dirty work… I use my damsel in distress card whenever there is any job like this
Rachna,
it is too big to go into the mouth as a whole, and if you have it hot, the cheese will be damn hot, so be careful…
a small bite at a time is better…
. And aubergene sounds like a great substitute… make sure it is salted though!
Hope you find the lychees…
Jyothi, hot and yummy it was…
thanks
What a great bbq idea, Sig! Like many friends, i too will make it with zucchini or eggplant strips
. LOVELY!
Delicious! I’ll have to make this with the peppers in my fridge.
That must have tasted awesome, I did taste bacon in mc-donalds sandwich..liked the taste but somehow didnt buy some from the market, How will be turkey bacon as a substitute, did you taste it? LMK its flavor… and always a wonderful pics, Thanks for sharing, Sig!
Musie,
sure, try it with the veggie wrap…
Amy, it is yummy… Have you been to Cactus? They have really nice poppers!
Padma, I;ve never had turkey bacon… I lovvvve the real bacon, so never had to try any substitute… U have to buy and try with bacon
I make a variation of these (I use cream cheese inside instead of shredded cheese) as my dish to bring to all parties. I have never had a bad review, rather requests to bring them again. They are super simple, and if you are reading this recipe for the first time, you have to try it.
Wow. I want to try this at my next party. I liked the cheese part of it.
These poppers are already popping in my mind … can’t wait to try them out. Thanks a lot.
I cook these pretty much the same way and I have found if you soak the jalaps for about an hour after you cut them it will bring the heat of the pepper down a little. Also I use cream cheese in mine and it is really amazing. Add peppered bacon for some flavor and the longer you cook them the less heat they have. I like mine with the bacon crisp. GREAT FOR SUMMER BBQ
Scooping out the seeds…takes my breath away and i cry and cough…i tried gloves, under water while de-seeding the peppers…
NOTHING works…any help???
i love em still/lol
