May 16th is LiveStrong Day, a day to raise awareness about cancer survivors organized by Lance Armstrong Foundation. There are many ways to get involved, Barbara of WinosAndFoodies has organized a blog event for us food bloggers to be a part of this day. This brave lady is a cancer survivor herself, and she has urged the food bloggers to cook an yellow dish to show our support and to spread the word about LiveStrong Day.

LIVESTRONG Day is the Lance Armstrong Foundation’s (LAF) grassroots advocacy initiative to unify people affected by cancer and to raise awareness about cancer survivorship issues on a national level and in local communities across the country.  LIVESTRONG Day 2007 will occur on Wednesday, May 16.

This simple yellow fried rice with sweet corn and turmeric is my entry for Barbara’s Taste of Yellow event. Turmeric, contrary to popular belief is used for its medicinal values rather than as a taste enhancer in Indian cooking. Turmeric is a strong antiseptic and has excellent antibacterial properties.  In India, turmeric is also used as a cosmetic, a face mask made of fresh turmeric paste is supposed to make your face glow! Consuming turmeric also helps in the beauty department by cleansing the body of toxins and reducing water retention, leaving you with a slim and toned body.

 Ingredients

Method

In a shallow pan, heat the oil and saute the onions and garlic till brown. Add the turmeric powder and coriander powder and saute for a minute.

Add the corn and peas and saute for a few minutes till the vegetables are cooked.

Add the lemon juice and salt and mix well.

Now add the cooked rice and mix to combine. Saute for a minute or so to let the liquids dry.

Serve hot with any spicy curry.

Lovely recipe for a great cause. Loved your lil’ write up on turmeric, its the “cure everything” on the counter top in an Indian kitchen. I often apply turmeric on any zits or skin allergies, boy, does it help!

    Rice dish looks yelowly lovely.
What is Indian cooking without turmeric right? If I cook meat dishes I have to wash it with turmeric to cleanse it first.

that’s one pretty pulav, sig :) colors & texture blending so well, Yum!! I usually use the pressure cooker, but I guess this way the grains really stay apart. My contribution is turmeric based as well ;-)

  19. Sig on May 7th, 2007 8:20 pm

Musie I mean Thin Garfield :), yeah turmeric is the best… I wrote all that but don’t really use it for anything other than cooking, guess I should start…

    Coffee , Thanks… I love corn too…in everything.

Reena thanks girl, it is just my serving platter…no special background :)

Roopa, Bharathy, Viji, thanks for your kind words

  20. Sig on May 7th, 2007 8:24 pm

Indo , never heard of washing meat in turmeric, I sometimes marinate the meat in curd and salt and wash it off to remove the smell. Turmeric is new to me, does it help to remove the smell or is there another purpose?

Asha, hehe yeah it is yellow isn’t it? I started with an ordinary corn fried rice, then I thought it may not be yellow enough hence the addition of turmeric, and it made it really yellow :)

Pravs, try corn in rice, it is a yummy combo.

Bee, lol, yeah didn’t add any non-veg this time, not even chicken stock, though we had it with a side of mutton curry.

  21. Sig on May 7th, 2007 8:26 pm

Nandita , :) thanks sweetie, yeah this time kept it pure vegetarian for all my veg friends out there.

Richa , waiting for your turmeric dish, I first completely forgot about turmeric when thinking of an yellow dish :)

    Freya, Sunita Thanks :)

  22. Sig on May 7th, 2007 8:31 pm

Shn, lol it was really the second time you made me scream… the first was when we both made meen pollichathu the same weekend, hope to make you scream sometime soon :D . Ah you don’t like sweet corn… really? It is so yummy!!!

    Lata, thanks and welcome!

Deepa thanks, I was going to make a Mango pudding to combine your AFAM and the taste of yellow, but there were too many mango dishes floating around this weekend, so changed my mind at the last minute. :) Ur mango entry is coming up soon.

Shilpa , if you have tried once you will know how good the corn and rice combo is… I love the taste of sweet corn!

A very nice recipe for a great cause.. simple yet deliciously healthy..nice presentation also Sig.

  25. indosungod on May 7th, 2007 10:23 pm

I usually clean chicken, fish, even mutton with turmeric powder and water, removes the bacteria, I have seen this done my mom and I kind of follow. It is precisely because of the antiseptic properties of turmeric.
