Chicken Lollypop is one dish that I miss greatly from the Indo-Chinese restaurants back in India. I’ve been to a bunch of Indo-chinese restaurants around here in US and Canada, but none of them served this wonderful dish!!! Recently I went to a Latin-Asian fusion restaurant and ordered Chicken Lollypops and was very disappointed, when it turned out to be a totally different dish. :-(

So this Friday night, when we wanted to chill at home instead of eating out, Siv and I decided to make some real spicy appetizers and make it a beer night. I picked the lollypops as these were fresh in my mind from the bad restaurant experience.

Since this was my first time making lollypops, I went online to find a good recipe, and was surprised to see that even Wikipedia has a page for this. Melting Wok has a recipe for real authentic Chinese style Chicken Lollipop. My quest was to find a spicy Indo-Chinese version, but I couldn’t find any that I liked. Since I learned the basic technique from Wikipedia, Melting Wok and Food Network, I decided to make up my own recipe for the marinade. It turned out great, Siv even commented that these are the best lollypops he ever had, but don’t take his words for it, it is in our wedding vows that he should praise everything I do…

The basic technique for getting the Lollypop effect as outlined in Food Network is:

“With a paring knife, cut around the thin tip of each chicken wing to loosen the meat
around the joint. While holding the base, push the meat down gently to expose the
bone and form a “chicken lollipop.” Remove any flesh left on the thin end with a clean towel. “

Here is my version of Chicken Lollypops.

Ingredients

Method

Prepare Lollypops from the Chicken wings as outlined above.

In a blender process the ingredients for the marinade to form a smooth paste. Marinate the chicken wings and refrigerate for at least an hour.

Mix the egg, flours and the chili powder to form a batter. Dip the chicken wings one by one in the batter, then coat with breadcrumbs and shallow fry in oil.

Serve with ketchup or chili sauce , goes great with cold beer.

Beer and spicy chicken lollies!!YUM!! You are making me hungry now Sig!:))
Looks beautiful.I have seen the foil wrapped on the bone to hold it without getting the sauce on the fingers.

Asha, yes I remember having it with foil wrapped on the bone too. But if I did it right, ie by wiping off the meat at the end of the bones with a wet towel and marinated it with care, this could be made by not getting any sauce on the bones at all… I would have done it if we had company :)

  16. Sig on March 18th, 2007 2:18 am

Manisha, you too have excellent taste my friend. :).
You could make out the table from that picture? Wow.

  17. Manisha on March 18th, 2007 4:10 am

You take great pictures, what can I say?

I refused to move my dining table when we moved. So we ate off a 4ft picnic table for over a year. Doesn’t make sense when put like that but if we had moved the dining table, I would have been stuck with it for life! I had something v specific in mind but just could not find it. So I went with my backup, which I had found at Scandinavian Designs over 4 months earlier. Mine is beech. Looks like yours is cherry (?).

There’s just one problem with this table. When an 8 year old spills juice, it slips through the glass on the top, drips onto the lower glass and then hits the floor. You have to open up the entire table, lift the glass or do antics to clean the glass and the wooden frame while it is still on the table… The 8 year old almost always gets her ear chewed off :D

  18. Sig on March 18th, 2007 4:43 am

Manisha, mine is Wenge with white glass top from Ligne Roset… I know what you mean about the cleaning pain. We never use it, it’s more like a show piece, we have dinner in front of the TV.:-)
